Obesity map reveals extent of Britain's weight problem

Department of Health figures for 2007-8 show that the NHS local administrative PCTs spent a total of £4.2bn on treating the health effects of overweight and obesity. The NHS's current budget for 2008-9 is just under £100bn.
Beyond the cost to our nation's health, obesity has a wider social and economic impact: absence from work due to sickness reduces productivity. The 2007 Foresight Report estimated that obesity already costs the wider economy in the region of £16bn, and that this will rise to £50bn per year by 2050, if nothing is done to combat the epidemic.
